In life we are all so busy going about our everyday lives, going to work and looking after the kids (I mean, I’m not there with the kids thing yet) and just the usual every day stuff. It can be hard to find time to get around to finishing off certain areas of the home. We all tend to get the big pieces such as the bed, sofas, the TV and wardrobes, but a lot of us tend to neglect the little features that can really transform a space. Adding things such as photo frames and little trinket ornaments, which yes can be a pain to actually source and hunt down, but when it comes to putting everything together it really finishes of a space and doesn’t leave it looking incomplete or forgotten about.
1. CHANGE THE HARDWARE
It’s often underestimated how by making simple changes in your home can easily change how it looks and give it a facelift, without having to cost an arm and a leg. There might be a piece of furniture in your house that you think may look a little bit tired and rundown or maybe you’re just bored of it. Think about whether or not you can change something simple, such as the hardware as this could change something that was a bit lacklustre to something that really helps to elevate the space. For example I was looking for art deco styled bedside tables and they were all over the price I was willing to pay for two bedside tables. Instead I went to trusty IKEA and I bought two side tables and purchased a couple handles from Amazon and in doing this, I changed what was a simple black table to something with a little bit more character. So now, I have a set of lovely bedside tables that have the feel that I wanted, without costing me £300 a piece. Instead it ended up costing around £65 per table. Beaut!
2. LESS IS MORE
I’m fully aware minimalism is a preference not everyone really cares for it, but I’ve found that minimal is key and it reiterates the whole “less is more” saying. When searching online I found that a lot of the more luxurious homes all had something in common, which was that they don’t have lots of things in every corner and everything was kept somewhat minimal. That being said it’s important not to mistake minimal with bare because then you have to question whether it’s actually minimal or incomplete. I’ve also found since having a fairly minimal bedroom with only the bare necessities it’s easier to keep clean, but it also retains the actual space of the room and your home. So if you are living in a small space, it would probably be a good idea to keep as much of the space open so it doesn’t feel even smaller and enclosed. Like I said, minimalism is definitely a preference however in terms of elevation that does seem to be a recurring theme.
3. GO GRAND
This is something that people may disagree with me on and I’m fully aware but I just said less is more, however I have found that going big and grand is a really good way to make a statement. For things such as photo frames instead of getting your typical 5 x 7 photo frame why not go for something a little bit bigger like a 50 x 50, as I said it would make a statement but also look like it was made for that space. In my bedroom personally I chose to have a very tall headboard and I knew along with that I that I couldn’t have little tiny lamps and so I also went quite big with the lamps too. It now has a grander aspect to my room and it gives it that hotel feel that I wanted. That being said it doesn’t have to cost you lots. For example, larger cushions for the sofa and like I said it is little things like photo frames and soft furnishings are easy to go grand with and they make a world of difference!
4. PAINT
You can easily give a little facelift simply with a lick of paint, which can immediately change your space. Whether that’s painting a room or an old cabinet and giving it a new lease of life, this is a quick, easy and affordable way that you can just change your surroundings. Particularly if you don’t like the colour of something and if you’re bored, then change it. It’s something that you can do yourself it doesn’t have to cost an insane amount. In my bedroom I went from having a completely white room for six years and last year, I ended up changing it to a stony grey colour. In doing this, it automatically gives a different vibe and everything feels slightly newer and thought out and feel different in the best way possible.
